Syria’s 5-year civil war has killed thousands in Aleppo, the main focus of clashes between insurgents, including Western-backed rebels, and pro-government forces backed by Russian Federation and Iran.

The U.S. and Russian Federation will create a joint intelligence-sharing center after the cease-fire has taken effect for seven continuous days, Mr. Lavrov said.

The talks between Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov aim to produce a nationwide cease-fire in Syria after more than five years of warfare and as many as 500,000 deaths.

Russian Federation and the United States have announced an agreement on Syria starting with a “cessation of hostilities” from sunset on Monday.

Kerry said the “bedrock” of the new deal was an agreement that the Syrian government would not fly combat missions in an agreed area on the pretext of hunting fighters from the banned Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria.

In northern Syria, a Turkish tank was struck during fighting between Turkey-backed Syrian opposition forces and Islamic State militants, killing three soldiers, according to military officials.

The main Syrian opposition umbrella group says it hopes a new U.S. “We welcome the deal if it is going to be enforced”.

Member of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces Ahmed Ramadan told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that preparations for establishing a safe zone stretching up to 90 km will demand the delivery and deployment of capable forces that can counter enemy air power and prevent its pounding. “We are announcing an arrangement that we think has the capability of sticking, but it is dependent on people’s choices”.

Lavrov cautioned that Moscow could not “100 percent guarantee” that all the parties would obey the ceasefire.

Mr. Lavrov said the Syrian government had been informed of the arrangements and is ready to enforce them.

A truce agreed in February and endorsed by the United Nations Security Council has been repeatedly broken by both sides.

The plan follows days of intensive talks between the two veteran diplomats.

The United States and Russian Federation early today announced an agreement on a plan to reduce violence in Syria, urging a ceasefire starting at sundown on Monday and a move towards a political transition.

“But let us also hope this agreement shows what is possible if people negotiate in good will towards a political settlement that will isolate Jihadist extremists, and bring a lasting peace not just to the city of Aleppo but to all the people of Syria”.
