5.7 earthquake hits Tanzania, felt in Kenya and Uganda

The quake measured 5.7 and was felt in nearby Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya, the US Geological Survey said.

A magnitude-5.7 natural disaster has killed at least 11 people and injured 192 more in northern Tanzania, authorities say. According to reports tremors were also felt in parts of Kigali, Rwanda.

Recent earthquakes in the area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides. Earlier in 2004 quake measuring 4.7 had struck the region.

The quake struck some 43 km from Bukoba.

Images posted in social media showed significant damage to buildings in Bukoba, a city of more than 70,000 people where most casualties were reported.

“We now have 11 people dead and more than 100 injured, several of whom have been hospitalized. rescue operations are ongoing”, Augustine Ollomi, the Kagera province police chief in charge of the Bukoba district said by telephone.

Meanwhile, rescue work has been carried out by the disaster management team in Tanzania also army personnel have been deployed at several spots.
