LvG backing for Rooney, Januzaj

Victory was United’s second straight 1-0 win after last week’s win over Tottenham and van Gaal believes they can still improve despite their 100 per cent record.

Winger Scott Sinclair added to AVTV: “I think where we kept the ball we created a little bit but there were other times where we had our backs against the wall and had to defend”.

Rooney spent much of last season in midfield, but Van Gaal has installed the 29-year-old as his first-choice centre-forward after the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao. “He had a lot of ball losses, but not only him, also his fellow players”.

Januzaj’s goal saw him race onto a splendid pass from Juan Mata, before cutting inside Villa captain Micah Richards and beating Brad Guzan with the help of a deflection off Ciaran Clark.

“I am pleased with the goal because it was a wonderful goal but you have to do more than scoring a goal and that was less good than the goal”.

Aston Villa vs. Manchester United is a fixture that has been kind to Wayne Rooney over the years.

Villa worked hard throughout the game to impress their home fans but just didn’t have enough to get into the game, following Adnan Januzaj’s deflected goal.

Van Gaal also responded to comments from Hristo Stoichkov, who played under the Dutchman at Barcelona, after the former Bulgaria global said the United boss “destroys” clubs and urged Barcelona’s Pedro not to move to Old Trafford.

Marouane Fellaini, who is suspended for the first three Premier League games of the campaign after his May dismissal at Hull, is available to feature in Europe.

He said: ‘I have always confidence in my players. I can say more.

“We don’t give many chances away and every game we have had more chances than the opponent”.

“They try to take instruction on and they try to keep at it the training field”.

In the goalkeeping department, meanwhile, Sergio Romero will hold onto his spot between the posts as the transfer speculation surrounding usual choice David de Gea and a move to Real Madrid rages on. We know we can play a lot better and we have the players to do that.
