Police say 2 killed, 25 injured in protests in Kashmir

In occupied Kashmir, two more youth were martyred and hundreds others injured due to brutal actions of Indian forces on protesters in different areas of the Kashmir Valley, taking the death toll in the ongoing Kashmir Intifada to 95.

While 26-year-old Sayar Ahmad Sheikh was killed after being hit on the head with a tear gas shell fired at demonstrators in Shopian district, Yawar Bhat reportedly died after being injured by pellets fired in Botengoo village of the Anantnag district.

“We have reports of more than 100 injured in today’s protests. Around 25 of them have bullet wounds”, the police officer said. He was hit by pellets in his abdomen and chest during a clash between protesters and the security forces.

Thousands of people in IHK have been protesting against Indian rule nearly daily since the killing of a popular freedom leader in a gunbattle with soldiers on July 8, staging “freedom rallies” across large parts of the disputed territory.

Since the unrest in the region first broke out 78 people have been killed.

The Indian Government has been criticised for the level of casualties and the use of pellet guns during the protests.

Authorities lifted a curfew in most parts of the territory in late August. There is a strong movement in the area aligned with Pakistan that seeks independence of the territory from India.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between the two neighbors, in full and have fought at least three major wars over the region in the past 65 years.
