Kerber beats Pliskova for 1st US Open title

However, one of her few blips in 2016 came recently in Cincinnati when she went down 6-3 6-1 to Pliskova in the final.

Demand is so low for Saturday’s women’s final that the showdown between Karolina Pliskova and Angelique Kerber is now the fourth-cheapest ticket of the entire two-week event. She also knows how to change the pace. She was four for five on break-point opportunities overall.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber backed up her status as the new world number one with a thrilling win over Czech Karolina Pliskova in the US Open final.

Angelique Kerber bookended her Grand Slam break-out year with a dramatic coda. So while Kerber has won a Grand Slam in the past – the Australian Open earlier this year – Pliskova shouldn’t be feeling the pressure as much because she’s already handled Kerber in a high-pressure situation very recently.

Despite the excellent form of Pliskova it’s pretty tough to see her pulling off another upset.

Karolina Pliskova has taken the second set of the U.S. Open final against Angelique Kerber, sending the match to a third.

She is playing her third major final this year, after losing to Williams at the last hurdle at Wimbledon, and an opponent who had previously never gone past the third round of a major. Kerber is going to have to play a lot of defense, and if she doesn’t have her legs all the way under her, she’ll find herself in a world of hurt.

Pliskova has surprised most to make the final at the last grand slam of the year, but her form has been outstanding. That is the best year in my career.

Eurosport will broadcast the 2016 US Open live in the United Kingdom across Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2. In 2013, the Pliskova sisters made history by becoming the first set of twins to win a WTA doubles title at Linz. All results are leading towards the Australian Open 2016 victor to get the number 1 position in the WTA rankings.

She is now trying to emulate her compatriot Hana Mandlikova, who is till now the only woman from the Czech Republic to win the US Open in 1985.

The lanky, 24-year-old Czech said that with her mounting confidence, and big serve, she can go all the way. In 2010, Karolina went on to win the junior Australian Open crown in singles, defeating Laura Robson. But Kerber said she was exhausted after playing the Rio Olympics, where she won the silver medal.
