Dustin Johnson carded a course-record nine-under-par 63 to move into a tie for the lead at the BMW Championship. “I’m making some putts this week”.

He then surged up the leaderboard with a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-three 13th, a 30-foot birdie putt on the 14th and an eagle from 25 feet on the 15th.

“Yeah, I would be, for sure”, Johnson said. “I got an ‘A, ‘ too, bud”.

Paul Casey did his best to stay with him. Holmes third on 202, four adrift after also shooting 68. The US Open champion finished 3-4-3-3-3 over the rain-soaked 7567-yard (6,919 metres) layout, made more hard Saturday by strong winds and tough pin placements.

“Since the spring, I just haven’t putted consistently well throughout a tournament”. “It was pretty ugly”.

Roberto Castro, tied with Johnson going into the third round, didn’t make a birdie in his round of 74.

Johnson, using a putter he put in the bag this week, launched his finishing flourish with a 10-foot birdie at the 14th. He missed the green at the par-3 13th and made bogey, setting the stage for his closing brilliance.

World Number One Jason Day had a third round 71 to be five under for the tournament.

“I’m not going to change anything”, Johnson said.

Sitting 10 strokes behind Johnson, Spieth would need a lot of help to get back into contention.

Castro, the Georgia Tech grad who needs a big week just to get home to Atlanta for the Tour Championship, is a practical sort.

“He’s going to be a very tough man to beat tomorrow”, Casey said. “He’s got maybe the best attitude in golf. So, if he keeps doing what he’s been doing – what he averaging, 6 under a day? – if does the same tomorrow, there’s no catching him”.

Casey was unable to hold onto his 54-hole lead last week in Boston, but he showed resiliency bouncing back and contending again.

Casey, a 13-time European Tour victor, won his only US PGA title at the 2009 Houston Open.

Hend eagled the par-5 15th and birdied the 18th to reach 14-under 199 at The Dutch.

Scott’s 67 matched the day’s low round from the field of 69.

“I’m seeing the lines really well”. “But I got a chance, and golf on Sunday in fun when you have a chance”.
