Ferentz, 16th-ranked Hawkeyes host Iowa State

While Iowa is trying to repeat their dominant season from 2015, Campbell is trying to turn around a Cyclones program that won just three games previous year. The 39-point win is the largest margin of victory over Iowa State by Iowa (2-0) under head coach Kirk Ferentz and tied for the third-largest win margin all-time in the rivalry.

And as it ended, the remnants of a sellout crowd of 70,585 chanted “Hawkeye State” as Iowa players surrounded the Cy-Hawk Trophy behind the Hawkeye bench, hoisted on their shoulders and carried into the locker room. The lead extended to 14-0 later in the quarter when Beathard found junior Akrum Wadley on a wheel route for a 26-yard scoring pass. Iowa State (0-2) would respond late in the first quarter with a drive that got down to the Hawkeye 7-yard line. Iowa went up 7-0 in the first quarter when Beathard connected with senior tight end George Kittle for a 9-yard touchdown.

Beathard put the game out of reach with the three TD passes in the first half – including a brilliant 12-yard toss to a heavily defended Matt VandeBerg.

Beathard completed 19-of-28 passes for 235 yards, connecting on 13 of his first 16 attempts against an ISU defense that sacked him twice, but never rattled the senior. But two sacks in the red zone forced the Cyclones to settle for a field goal.

The Cyclones’ top wide receiver Allen Lazard reeled in seven catches for 111 yards against the Hawkeyes, but that was just about the only highlight of the night for his squad. Wadley added 49 yards and another score on the ground. The second half began with five punts between the two teams before Iowa increased its lead to 35-3 when Wadley ran in from three yards out.

The Iowa Hawkeyes square off against the Iowa State Cyclones tonight in a college football game on the second big Saturday of the 2016 schedule.

VandeBerg completed a 10-play, 66-yard march with a 12-yard touchdown catch with 10:15 remaining in the second quarter, extending the Hawkeyes’ lead to 21-3. Joel Lanning was 8-for-20 for 86 yards and an interception, and Jacob Park finished 6-for-15 for 79 yards.

In their next games on September 17, the Hawkeyes host North Dakota State and the Cyclones travel to TCU.

Number 16 Iowa (1-0) will host the Cyclones (0-1) on Saturday, a week after dominating Miami of OH 45-21.
