The man who tried to assassinate USA president Ronald Reagan 35 years ago will leave a Washington psychiatric hospital to live full-time in Virginia on September 10.
Friedman’s ruling says Hinckley will have to live for at least a year with his mother, Jo Ann, in her house in the gated community of Kingsmill. At the time, Judge Paul L. Friedman.
Today’s announcement came from Hinckley’s attorney, Barry Levine, who said he thought his client “will be a citizen about whom we can all be proud”, the Associated Press reported. He could also be returned to St. Elizabeths Hospital in the District if he relapses or violates the terms of his release. The judge decided that now Hinckley is free of psychological symptoms of depression or disorder during more than two decades, what justifies the mistake. For the past two-plus years, he has spent the majority of his time there: 17 days each month. “People of goodwill should celebrate”, he added.
Hinckley’s representatives declined to release additional details about his departure or plans outside of the hospital. He also must stay out of contact with the news media, his victims and their families, the USA president and members of Congress.
A spokesman for the Secret Service did not immediately return a message seeking comment. His press secretary James Brady was shot in the head and left paralyzed.

“The court finds by the preponderance of the evidence that Mr Hinckley will not be a danger to himself or to others if released on full-time convalescent leave to Williamsburg under the conditions proposed”.
