Clinton calls Trump supporters ‘basket of deplorables’

On a ballot including Libertarian Gary Johnson, Donald Trump attracts 44 percent support, compared to 41 percent for Clinton, with Gary Johnson registering 4 percent support. “I think it will cost her at the polls!”

“Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt right, but alt right leaders are with Trump”, Merrill said on Twitter.

Clinton’s comments drew a rebuke from Kellyanne Conway, the campaign manager of the Republican nominee, who said in a message on Twitter that Clinton had insulted millions of Americans.

The rhetorical scuffle comes as the candidates head into the final two months of the campaign, with Mr. Trump trying to make up ground on Ms. Clinton before the November 8 election.

We shouldn’t be surprised to hear Clinton denigrate her opposition. And unfortunately there are people like that.

Earlier on Friday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that the United States is prepared to do what is needed to work with allies to defend against a growing threat from North Korea. “It’s like incredible”, he said.

“And he has lifted them up”, Clinton continued. “Nearly 15 million people watched the event, and over 26 million tuned in at some point during the hour”.

Clinton said Trump’s praise of Putin as a better leader than Obama was “not just unpatriotic” but also “scary”.

This is a less idealistic vision of politics – some might say more realistic – than that of some of Clinton’s fellow Democrats.

The former secretary of state has granted some 350 interviews with the press so far this year and has also responded to journalists’ questions at many campaign events, but the Thursday press conference was the first such formal gathering with the media she has held since December 5, 2015. She has made similar comments recently, including on an Israeli television station.

But “Trump has built his campaign largely on prejudice and paranoia”, she said, adding: “I won’t stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign”.

Trump added: “How can she be president of our country when she has such contempt and disdain for so many great Americans?”

Manley said, though, that Clinton was right to walk back her comments. But reporters traveling with her campaign were not allowed in and did not see her.

Mr. Trump did not directly respond to her critique Thursday. She pretty much stood by everything else.

Obama hit back at Trump on Thursday for criticizing his foreign policy record, saying the Republican nominee for the November 8 election was unfit to follow him into the Oval Office and the public should press him on his “outright wacky ideas”.
