Djokovic downs Monfils to reach US Open final
Humid conditions at the Arthur Ashe Stadium made it hard for both Wawrinka and Nishikori at the start of the match, but it was the latter who adapted better early on.

Wawrinka won his maiden major at the 2014 Australian Open, before knocking off Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final.
Ultimately, Djokovic prevailed in four sets. But he started to find his form in a quarterfinal victory over 2009 U.S. Open champ Juan Martin del Potro.
Serving for the set, Monfils was down triple break point yet roared back to reel off five straight points snatching the game and a set with a screaming backhand victor.
Stan Wawrinka, of Switzerland, reacts after beating Kei Nishikori, of Japan, during the semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, in NY. But Djokovic emerged to win.
Wawrinka was up a break in that set, but Nishikori broke right before the rain delay. Swiss sensation Stan Wawrinka was happy to oblige. “To play Novak in the final.is going to be something special”.
Third-seeded Wawrinka withstood an early onslaught from sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, asserting himself in the later stages to claim a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Wawrinka is a two-time major champion and trying to reach his first final at Flushing Meadows. He goes on to face Djokovic on Sunday.
Monfils, however, had the following message for McEnroe: “I’m sorry if you think I’m unprofessional, but I guess I’m working, I’m learning”.
“This is one of the craziest matches I’ve ever seen”, McEnroe said.
“It’s okay, you know”.
“He was playing very good from he beginning, dictating, not giving me any time to get my game”.
The once-dominant Big Four act is no more.
“The first question is like you’re not competing”, Monfils said. “That’s when I started to get aggressive”.
Novak Djokovic has downed Gael Monfils in the USA semifinals to reach the final for the seventh time.
After a short comeback attempt from the Frenchman, the opening set finally went the way of the defending champion. He played some good tennis today.
Novak Djokovic usually has all the answers on the court, but he didn’t know what to say soon after his semi-final win over Gael Monfils at the US Open on Saturday morning (AEST). But Monfils held there to 5-1, then transitioned into what either appeared to be an attempt to “tank” – in other words, lose on objective, for who knows what reason – or the tennis equivalent of a “rope-a-dope”, in which he wanted to appear not to be interested in defending against Djokovic but then would whip a big shot of his own. Djokovic responded by tearing off his shirt.
Djokovic’s fortunes took a nosedive, first as he called for treatment to his left shoulder and then as three break-back points slipped by, and with them the set.
Quickly down 5-0 in the first set, Monfils decided it was time for a drastic change of plans. Monfils erased it with an ace and on game point, chased down a volley and put it away easily to finally get a game on the scoreboard to start a freakish switch of momentum. So he transformed back into his entertaining, athletic self.
“It was a odd match, as it always is when you play Gael, who is a very unpredictable player”.
“There’s not only one way to play tennis”.
Neither a date nor site has been chosen for 2018. Roger [Federer] and Novak are great champions.
Croatia’s Mate Pavic and Germany’s Laura Siegemund landed the mixed doubles title with a 6-4 6-4 upset win over the seventh-seeded USA partnership of Rajeev Ram and Coco Vandeweghe.
“I have a great partner”. “And then it was odd because maybe (fans) will listen to commentary and say I’m unprofessional, I’m poor whatever”. Monfils opened his next service game after the timeout with his tenth and eleventh double faults of the match. “So I have an extra day now to recover and get ready for the finals, which is definitely where I desire to be when I come to a Grand Slam”.

The first set was where things started going insane. However, she had to settle for a silver medal after being upset by the No. 34 women’s player, Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, thus failing in her bid to become the first German woman to win Olympic gold since Steffi Graf did so for West Germany in Seoul in 1988.
