In her match against Victoria Azarenka in the US Open, she took part in one of the matches of the year, although Azarenka was the one who prevailed.

He lost five games in a row and 20 of 24 points in one stretch, and came up limping after the set’s final point.

Wawrinka, who has won his last ten tour-level finals and owns 14 ATP titles overall, says he is thrilled to reach his first final at the U.S. Open.

After losing the first set, Wawrinka found his range, used his experience and brought that fighting quality of his to the fore to beat his Japanese opponent 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2. He won the Australian Open in January, and the French Open in June when the theatrics were at a relative minimum by Friday’s standards.

“I haven’t played Stan in some time now”, Djokovic said of Wawrinka.

“That’s a little bit tough because for sure people are not really ready to see that”.

It proved a decisive blow for Nishikori, who was now hobbling with cramp, and Wawrinka showed no mercy as he broke three times in the fourth to seal victory in three hours and eight minutes.

Even the closure of the roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium didn’t help Nishikori this time.

The fourth set followed a similar pattern with Nishikori recovering after Wawrinka had surged ahead, but the world number seven could not consolidate after breaking to get back to 3-2. Nishikori was the U.S. Open runner-up in 2014.

Wawrinka will face No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday.

Stan Wawrinka set up a US Open final showdown with Novak Djokovic after overcoming Kei Nishikori in the last four on Friday. “I want to be able to put myself in position to fight for the trophy, and everything that has happened in the tournament so far is behind me now”.

“I know it is not natural because first question is you’re not competing. I try my best”.

Monfils, who had never beaten Djokovic in 12 prior meetings, felt he had no choice but to mix things up to win. There were moments in which it appeared that Monfils’ attempts to get into Djokovic’s head would succeed.

“I’ve seen strategy changes”, McEnroe said.

The defending champion was at times aggravated by Monfils’ attitude but there appeared to be no bad feeling when at the end they met at the net.

Djokovic entered Friday having enjoyed the easiest path to a major semifinal in the almost half-century of the Open era: Three of his first five foes pulled out of because of injuries. On Twitter, 18-time grand slam victor Chris Evert criticized Monfils before his mini revival.

He broke Wawrinka in the fifth game of the match and held serve to take the first set.

Djokovic, the No. 1 seed and defending champion, dipped in form in the third set, and had a trainer massage his left shoulder and, later, his right shoulder.

Djokovic ripped his white shirt off as he dropped the third set.

Gael Monfils insisted his freakish “rope-a-dope” tactics in his US Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic were deliberate as the eccentric Frenchman blasted accusations of not trying.

A jittery Monfils poked successive double faults to donate the break and a 2-0 lead. Djokovic had his fair share of struggles with his service game and looked to be cramping up at times. Against Murray, that seemed to swing momentum toward Nishikori, making the conditions more favorable for his game.
