Hyundai has been one of the most prominent players in the premium hatchback segment in India with the Elite i20.

The Hyundai i20 1.4 petrol automatic variant is now available for sale across dealerships from today. Priced at Rs 9.42 lakh (ex-Mumbai), the Elite i20 automatic is only available in Magna variant. The Asta (O) costs Rs 7.76 lakh for the top-end petrol while the top-end diesel costs Rs 9 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).
The two-pedal version of the hatchback is offered only in the “Magna” variant and gets an engine all to itself.
In addition to the Magna automatic, Hyundai has upped the safety aspect of the Elite i20 by making six airbags as a standard feature in the Asta (O).
This overboard pricing is a result of the fact that the Elite i20 comes with a bigger engine: a 1.4-litre Dual VTVT four-cylinder petrol that churns out 98 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 132 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. This motor is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission which is a conventional torque convertor unit. As you’d expect, this isn’t going to be a very sporty transmission, but it will make city commutes less hassling. However, it does come with amenities like the 2-DIN infotainment system with four speakers and AUX/USB/Bluetooth connectivity, steering-mounted controls, power windows for all four doors, flip key and dual airbags.
The Elite i20 automatic will compete against the likes of the Honda Jazz CVT, Maruti Baleno CVT, and Volkswagen Polo GT TSI. At a price of Rs 9.02 lakh, it’s more expensive than the Baleno CVT, Jazz CVT and costs almost the same as the Polo GT TSI.

Being offered in the Magna trim variant, the automatic Elite i20 does miss out on several notable features like ABS, rear camera with parking sensors, alloy wheels and height adjustment for seatbelts.
