Hillary Clinton says she regrets “deplorables” comment about Donald Trump supporters
Hillary Clinton’s low opinion of the people that support this campaign should be denounced in the strongest possible terms. “Right?” Clinton said, per The Post’s Abby Phillip. At a fundraiser, she declared that half of Trump’s supporters belong in a “basket of deplorables”. Others see Clinton’s statement as more reminiscent of Barack Obama’s 2008 statement where he said certain Americans “cling to guns or religion”.

Trump’s campaign hammered on Clinton throughout the day. This time, however, it was Republicans who thought their opponent had wandered into political damaging territory. Now he says his rival Hillary Clinton could shoot someone in an arena in front of 20,000 people and not be prosecuted.
She issued a statement today expressing “regret” for the being “grossly generalistic”. “I regret saying “half” – that was wrong”.
Deplorable comments by @HillaryClinton at her $250,000 fundraiser w/ elitists. “So I won’t stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign”. “I think it will cost her at the polls!”
Her comment was “reprehensible, despicable, yet revealing”, said Cleveland Pastor Darrell Scott. “It demonstrates the type of person she really is”.
-The 47% remark dovetailed neatly with a narrative the Obama campaign had built throughout the summer that Romney was a heartless corporate chieftain.
“And their supporters appear to make up half his crowd when you observe the tone of his events”, he added.
And it will take a lot of work by both Trump and Clinton to win these voters over. “It’s not a serious presidential campaign”.
Unlike those noted gaffes, however, it is not clear how Mrs Clinton’s public remarks will directly damage her. “All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it”.
Many of Clinton’s fundraisers have been closed to the media, but not the one on Friday night. “Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt right, but alt right leaders are with Trump”.
One, she said, was the “basket of deplorables”.
Speaking to gay rights supporters at the “LGBT for Hillary” gala, she added that those people are “irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America”. He has given voice to their websites…
“He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric”, Clinton said. “They say I have the most loyal people. where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK?”
“I certainly don’t think she helped herself”.
As far as I can tell, none of the Trump campaign pushback to Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” comments have said anything about the people Clinton was talking about not being racist, not being misogynist or by whatever definition not being ‘haters.’ It’s not referenced once.
