It is not the first time mishaps at factories killed people in Bangladesh.

More than 20 firefighting teams battled to douse the flames, which also caused the partial collapse of the four-storey building.

“The fire is still not under control”, police inspector Sirajul Islam told AFP.

The police said many workers may still be trapped inside the building.

A boiler has exploded and triggered a fire at a packaging factory in Bangladesh – leaving at least 12 people dead and 16 injured, officials said.

The tragedy struck as families were preparing to celebrate the major Muslim festival of Idd-al-Adha. “We sent the critically injured victims to the hospitals in Dhaka”, he added.”Several of them are very critical”.

Some are still searching for their relatives, like Wridoy Barua. “My brother Delwar Hossain told us last night he would take us to our home district of Sherpur”. “I was working inside the office room when I heard an explosion and felt a tremor. There is no news of him”, he said.

On its website, Tompaco Foils lists British American Tobacco and Nestlé among its brands.

How many people were in the building?

The latest incident comes weeks after over 100 people fell ill when they inhaled gas that leaked from a fertiliser plant in the town of Chittagong in southern Bangladesh.
