As Syria Ceasefire Deal Solidifies, Attacks Escalate

If the truce holds from Monday, Russia and the United States will begin seven days of preparatory work to set up a “joint implementation center”, where they will share information to delineate territory controlled by Nusra and opposition groups.

Russian Federation has continued to call on the United States to separate the opposition forces it supports from militant groups.

Ankara has welcomed the US-Russia deal and is preparing to provide humanitarian aid to the northern city of Aleppo, in conjunction with the UN.

Ghasemi once more reaffirmed Iran’s emphasis on political solution as a the sole way to settle down the Syrian crisis.

The ceasefire deal that could see coordinated US-Russia military action in war-torn Syria comes after months of Moscow calling on Washington to join its bombing campaign against jihadists.

Under the agreement the US would work with opposition groups and the Russians with the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad to make sure the cease fire holds.

The attack targeted a market in the rebel-held city of Idlib, according to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The United States and Russian Federation hailed a breakthrough deal early on Saturday to put Syria’s peace process back on track, though the war-torn country’s rebels said they doubted it would hold and violence raged on in Aleppo.

The breakthrough agreement, following talks in Geneva, will see a nationwide ceasefire starting on Monday, followed a week later by an unexpected new military partnership between the USA and Russian Federation to target Islamic State and al Qaida militants. The city has been the focus of fighting between multiple sides of Syrian war over the past several months.

This is the first time between the United States and Russian Federation reach an agreement on such a comprehensive package.

Indeed, the US began bombing Syria in September 2014 explicitly due to the presence of Nusra, which it claimed was planning attacks against the West.

Kerry said if all sides follow the parameters of the plan, it could be a “turning point” for Syrians and lead to a possible political resolution.

Then, the USA and Russian Federation would begin intelligence sharing and targeting coordination, while Assad’s air and ground forces would no longer be permitted to target the al-Qaida-linked militant group of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front.

Documents outlining the specifics of the agreement were not released, and Lavrov said at a news conference that they would be withheld to prevent terrorist targets from anticipating attacks against them. Several rebel groups have already said they don’t expect President Bashar Assad to observe the deal, so it remains unclear whether their foreign sponsors can make them refrain from hostilities. -Russian agreement will be enforced in order to ease the suffering of civilians while an official with al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria vowed to retaliate throughout the world if the Americans and Russians target them.

Syria’s regime calls all its armed opponents “terrorists”, and Lavrov criticised the opposition for issuing “ultimatums, the refusals to cooperate, et cetera” as he announced the new deal Friday.

To secure Russia’s cooperation, the US hopes the new military partnership is enough of a carrot.

“I call on all parties to the Syria conflict and all countries with influence upon them to do what is needed to end violence and lift sieges”, he said in a statement.

Washington has said indiscriminate bombing of civilians by the Syrian army would have to end under an enforceable deal.
