In a statement, officials with ITT Educational Services – the parent company of ITT Technical Institutes – said they are ceasing all academic operations on ITT Tech campuses “after 50 years of continuous service”.
School won’t start this fall quarter for thousands of college students nationwide after ITT Technical Institute closed its doors Tuesday.
ITT Technical Institutes operates 130 campuses in 38 states, including two campuses in San Antonio.
The Department of Eduction in MA told Channel 5 that there were more than 500 MA students enrolled in ITT Tech when the closing hit, and 101 of those students were veterans.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Education held a series of webinars to inform students about their options moving forward. Students will not be eligible for a closed school discharge if they choose to transfer credits and complete their program of study or a comparable program at another school.
Apply for a loan discharge, which would in effect wipe out their federal student debt.
Almost 12,500 students used the GI Bill at ITT in 2015, according to data from the national advocacy group Student Veterans of America. The government’s reasoning is that ITT Tech failed to properly get accredited by a government-recognized accrediting agency. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Securities and Exchange Commission each filed a lawsuit against ITT Tech.
“Our focus and priority with our remaining staff is on helping the tens of thousands of unexpectedly displaced students with their records and future educational options”, the statement said.
Under the new measures, current students can continue receiving federal grants and loans.
The Indiana-based school said it “Exhausted the exploration of alternatives”, and that the sanctions denied them due process.

The semester is over before it begins for more than 1,900 Tennessee students.
