US Open: Stan Wawrinka will be big challenge for Novak Djokovic

There is no doubt that Wawrinka is a supreme player.

However, he was unable to replicate that excellent performance against Wawrinka, who will now face Novak Djokovic in the final.

Stanislas Wawrinka, as he was known then, had lost to Novak Djokovic 10 straight times when they met in the fourth round of the 2013 Australian Open.

For the last two weeks, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, the Ukraine, Argentina, and today, Japan all mumbled to themselves as Wawrinka fought through right to the US Open Final.

Djokovic hasn’t really played one clean match yet and came in with an injured left wrist that prompted his handlers to consider withdrawing. Regarding their long matches, Wawrinka said: “I think a bit of the style of how we play the matchup always has been interesting”.

“For me, I think I was hitting too short and wasn’t making enough first serves”.

“It was a odd match, as it always is, I guess, when you play Gaël, who is very unpredictable player”.

“He’s the number one player, an incredible fighter, an wonderful player, but I have enough confidence in myself that when I play my best level I can beat him. He has that variety in his game and he can be very risky for everybody”.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori admitted that he felt “tired” during his US Open semi-final defeat to Stan Wawrinka in NY on Friday. “Roger (Federer), Novak, Rafa (Nadal) they are incredible champions”.

Monfils, who was playing in his second major semi-final – his first since 2008, hadn’t dropped a set in five matches in NY, however he couldn’t have made a poorer start.

His only blip was his third round loss to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon, an exit fuelled partially by unspecified personal issues.

The U.S. Tennis Association held a news conference during the U.S. Open on Friday to announce its partnership with the team event, which will debut in Prague in September 2017. He is 10-0 in tournament finals since 2014.

Nothing he does on a court with his racket is as important as his smooth, one-handed backhand.

After three of his first five opponents withdrew due to injury, the world No. 1 was rarely stretched in his semi-final win over Gael Monfils. “But I’m trying to work as hard as I can to give me the chance to play well every time I step on the court”, Wawrinka said after beating Kei Nishikori in a four-set semifinal.

For Djokovic, it’s safe to say, his final against Wawrinka is unlikely to be almost as eventful as his match with Monfils.

Even Djokovic wasn’t impressed, believed it belied the effort a player should give in a grand slam semifinal.

Told about McEnroe’s comments, Monfils says he’s “very sad to learn that such a legend (would) criticize me, because at the end what I can say to John is, ‘You know, John, I want to be the best. Novak knows also that I can play my best tennis in the final of a Grand Slam”.

The Frenchman can also create controversy.

The 12-time Grand Slam champion arrived at Flushing Meadows with question marks over his form, fitness and mental state.

There were doubts over Novak Djokovic’s fitness at the start of the US Open, but the world number one is now on the brink of another title.

Pete Sampras was the last player over-30 to win in NY and that was back in 2002.
