Butler signed a three-year, $30 million contract with Oakland a few weeks after the Royals advanced to the World Series in 2014.

The Oakland A’s have released DH Billy Butler, cutting ties with one of the more disappointing signings the team has made in recent years. Butler saw his playing time reduced when the right-handed batter was pushed into a platoon role and only had 242 plate appearances on the year.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the fight began before batting practice on August 19 over what Butler apparently said to Valencia while an equipment representative was in the clubhouse. Butler ended up on the seven-day concussion disabled list. A heated discussion after the representative led to “Valencia. swinging and hit [ting] Butler in the temple”. The A’s are still on the hook for what’s remaining on his deal this season, as well as the $10 million remaining for next season.
