Controversial Costa scores twice but Chelsea are held

Chelsea saw their flawless start to the new season ended by Swansea on Sunday as Diego Costa netted a late equaliser to clinch a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium.

Costa’s acrobatics in the 81st minute salvaged a point for Chelsea at Liberty Stadium after two defensive blunders in a three-minute span nearly gifted Swansea a victory.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois then conceded a penalty from which Gylfi Sigurdsson scored and Leroy Fer fired the Swans in front after seemingly fouling Gary Cahill as he took the ball and raced through.

Nine minutes from the end Costa, who also received his third yellow card in four games, equalised with an overhead scissors kick that might have been penalised for unsafe play.

“Just looking at the injury John Terry got, I’d be surprised if he starts on Friday”, Sinclair said on Chelsea TV.

“He’s scoring a lot of goals for us and it’s very important because he can score goals, he works hard for us, he makes a lot of movement and obviously he is a big part of our team and we are happy that he is scoring goals”.

“But in only two minutes we were losing 2-1. The spirit was good but we are disappointed to only get one point”.

Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin felt the match-up had been a fair contest, and refused to be critical of Costa staying down after several tussles with his centre-halves.

Guidolin also confirmed he had apologised to Neil Taylor after the Wales global reacted angrily to being substituted before the break as Swansea changed system.

“Yes, yes, I apologise on the bench, and in the dressing-room”, said Guidolin. I think he understood, but I made a mistake.

“He went over on his ankle pretty badly and then having to stay on and running about on it for two or three minutes, that could be the difference between you being out for two or three weeks, because you are aggravating the injury”, the ex-Blues defender continued.

“There is no problem between me and Neil”.

“Chelsea are a strong, strong team”.

“My team needs a reaction”.

“We needed a change of attitude and we played more aggressively”.
