Hillary Clinton says ‘deplorables’ comment about Trump supporters is ‘grossly generalistic’
“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables”. “I regret saying ‘half” – that was wrong”, she said in a statement released by her campaign.

The Democratic nominee for president was speaking at a fundraiser in NY on Friday night when she said, “to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables”. And unfortunately there are people like that. “And [Trump] has lifted them up”.
In a statement Saturday, Clinton said that, “many of Trump’s supporters are hard-working Americans who just don’t feel like the economy or our political system are working for them”.

Another roughly one-fifth (22%) of Trump voters say they are “Very Enthusiastic” juxtaposed to 28% for Mrs. Clinton. “They say I have the most loyal people. where I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK?”
Trump’s campaign pounced on Clinton’s candid views.
Running mate Mike Pence drew loud applause when he told social conservatives: “Hillary, they are not a basket of anything. They are Americans, and they deserve your respect”.
“If I were to be grossly generalistic, I would say you can take Trump supporters and put them in two big baskets”, Clinton said.
The donor said if Trump wins, the USA would “fall backward and become more isolated from the global community”.
On Friday night, he told supporters in Pensacola, Florida, that Clinton could shoot someone and not be prosecuted. “It’s another to attack the people who support him”, said Smith, who worked for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s presidential bid.
Trump’s son Eric posted a photo on Twitter of his father’s supporters packed into a sports arena for a late Friday rally.
Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager, called on Clinton to apologize for her remarks.
It’s also important that Clinton has avoided directly calling Trump a racist, instead putting the emphasis on the rhetoric he’s promoting.
“Now, some of those folks-they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America”, she continued, echoing both President Barack Obama’s gaffe during the 2008 campaign about how some Americans “cling to guns or religion”, and Mitt Romney’s in 2012 about the “47 percent” of Americans who he portrayed as hopelessly dependent on the government.
“The question is whether Trump can show a discipline thus far unseen”.
But Clinton might’ve crossed an important line here: She’s not just calling out her opponent anymore. In contrast, he said, Clinton and the Democrats are “running on a vision of optimism, pragmatism, inclusiveness and mutual benefit”. Clinton’s event on Friday was only the sixth out of the more than 330 fundraisers she’s attended as a candidate that was open to the press.
And Bakari Sellers, a Clinton surrogate and CNN contributor, was defiant when asked about the remark.
“Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt right, but alt right leaders are with Trump”, Merrill said on Twitter. His campaign struggled to recover after the remark leaked.
She specified that she believes the word “deplorable” was reasonable to describe much of Trump’s campaign.
