After launch, the Samsung products are likely to go head-to-head with Apple’s second phablet, which is tipped to feature Force Touch technology in its screen. The company now, like Apple, uses a tokenization model where, once the NFC terminal is tapped, Google sends a virtual card number to the merchant and completes the transaction within its own cloud servers, charging the card you stored in your Google Wallet account. It will certainly be hoping to avoid the stuttering launch that Apple Pay suffered, with major banks like HSBC not supporting the software on day one. With the Gear S2, it seems Samsung is going down the fashion route – a smart move considering the thick and technology-heavy looks of its first smartwatch range.

Although Samsung hasn’t revealed much past the initial teaser images, you can clearly see the Apple Watch’s impact on Samsung’s strategy for smartwatches. The company announced that MasterCard customers will be able to tie their cards to their Samsung Pay accounts starting this fall. The technology also won’t work where you need to insert your card into a machine, such as gas pumps and ticket kiosks.

The service will initially work with just four Samsung phones – the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge from this spring and the upcoming Note 5 or S6 Edge Plus. Android Pay will be built into the Android M operating system and should be available on all NFC-enabled Android devices. The home screen of the device shows a circular selection of app icons, counting a calendar, phone, weather, messaging, voice recording, running, Nike+ in addition to settings applications. It no longer feels like a cheap plastic Samsung phone, which is one of the many differences between it and LG’s latest G4 smartphone. Other data also implied that its market share stood flat on-year over the cited period.

In its original verdict, the court had awarded $1.05bn in damages in 2012, which was later reduced by US District Court Judge Lucy Koh by $450.5m in March 2013.
