Stipe Miocic delivered in front of his hometown crowd on Saturday by defeating Alistair Overeem with a brutal first round KO at UFC 203 in Cleveland, Ohio. “I’ve trained super hard and I’ve trained too hard to give this up”. Miocic then showed his championship grit as he not only escaped the submission, but immediately drove back to his feet and went on the offensive.

But Overeem knocked Miocic down with a straight left and almost finished the fight when he raced in and followed with a guillotine.

Miocic found the range and clipped Overeem before getting his back and getting to full mount before destroying the Dutchman.

Overeem scored a knockdown on Miocic with a left kick about a minute into the round.

Following another left hand, Miocic landed four straight rights to Overeem’s jaw, knocking out the challenger and forcing the referee’s stoppage.

In the post-fight interview, Overeem bizarrely claimed that Miocic had tapped to his guillotine, leading to some cringe worthy yet conclusive video analysis by he and the painfully thorough Joe Rogan.

On the other hand, Overeem (41-15, 1 NC) snaps his 4-fight victory parade with the painful setback to Miocic and suffers his tenth knockout loss in his 17-year prizefighting career.

Here is a quick breakdown along with some predictions for each fight on the main card. Overeem knocked him out in the opening round of his UFC debut fight.

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will defend his title against Alistair Overeem at UFC 203. He said that his goal at UFC 203 was to shut Overeem down and “turn the motherboard off”, something he convincingly accomplished after quickly recovering from the knockdown.

That sounds like a great fight.

“In life you either go big or you go home. What sets me apart is the ability to finish opponents of all calibre – and there’s been many of them”, he said. “I just want my belt again”. Then it’s a Bantamweight clash between perennial title contender, Urijah Faber, facing the unheralded – but super tough – Jimmie Rivera. “Doesn’t matter how many time you get knocked down, get back up”.

In the co-main event, heavyweights Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne put on an entertaining affair to cap the undercard.
