CDC: Government ‘essentially out of money’ to fight Zika

Bill Louda, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Florida Atlantic University, said researchers have found that naled can be harmful in large doses, but not in the small quantity – approximately two tablespoons per acre – used in aerial spraying.

Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a first-of-its-kind domestic travel advisory, which cautioned pregnant women and women considering pregnancy against visiting certain parts of Miami.

Sign boards highlighting symptoms of Zika virus have been kept inside the new worldwide terminal building close to the immigration wing at the arrival side to keep the travellers informed about the virus alert.

“We can’t stress enough that it’s very important for people to inspect in and around their homes and dump out any standing water so these mosquitoes can’t breed”, County Environmental Health Director Elise Rothschild said.

Experts say the U.S. needs more control options, from new insecticides to innovative tools like genetically modified mosquitoes.

He’s pleased spraying is pushed back to 10 p.m. and how the district’s website informs the public about spraying schedules.

The cost to treat a microcephaly case throughout a lifetime could range from $3.8 million to $10 million, depending on the severity of the case, he said, adding that he was concerned given Puerto Rico’s financial situation plus other limits as a result of being a US territory. The World Health Organization has never evaluated naled for that goal, and the European Union banned the chemical in 2012, determining it was risky for aquatic life and humans, specifically when inhaled or after coming in direct contact with skin.

Flowertown Bee Farm and Supplies lost over 2.5 million bees, and 46 hives and a single blow like that is a serious threat to the bee farming community.

“Field bees returning to the hive with any taint are blocked by the guard bees, who fight to the death to keep them out”, he said.

Later that day you could see children and adults wearing medical masks in response to the spraying. “After a spray, it turns into a war zone at the [hive] entrances”.

Although Zika and West Nile are similar in that they appear to affect the nervous system and are primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, studies suggest Zika also can be sexually transmitted- something scientists have never before seen among these infections, called flaviviruses.

“We need bees to pollinate our native trees like mangroves and white tamarind”, Ballestas said. “Can you imagine, colleagues, the fear and anxiety in this chamber if these hundred mosquitoes were outside this jar and not inside this jar?” he asked. The massacre was blamed on human error; the government did not warn local beekeepers about plans to spray so they could temporarily cover the hives. “The heart of the hive stays alive but it kills all the fliers out in the morning”.

Aerial spraying, in combination with dropping pellets to kill larval mosquitoes, is the only way to reach remote areas of the Keys, Leal said.

Despite email requests over a week, the National Centre for Disease Control, the National Institute of Virology (NIV), and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) did not respond to requests for comment on the possible entry of Zika into India.

“We have traps that catch mosquitoes live”, said Michael Romanski, superintendent of the Ocean County New Jersey Mosquito Extermination Commission. Naled is also the safest pesticide that the Aedes aegypti mosquito so far has not developed a resistance to, she said.

Aerial spraying for mosquitoes is again underway in Miami Beach despite continuing protests.
