The Angels haven’t announced Shoemaker’s replacement in the rotation but recently demoted veteran Tim Lincecum was mentioned as a possible candidate by manager Mike Scioscia.

Sunday afternoon’s game between the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners was delayed for a few minutes after Los Angles Angels starter Matt Shoemaker took a line drive off the side of his head in the second inning.

After he left the field, Shoemaker was tended to by Angel’s trainers in the team clubhouse for just a short period prior to an ambulances taking him to a nearby hospital.

Once the trainers came out onto the diamond, Shoemaker was brought to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured skull and a small hematoma.

Shoemaker had allowed one hit with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings before the incident.

Initial readings of CT scan indicate small skull fracture & small hematoma.

“The CT scan confirmed or when they actually did the operation that confirmed where the bleeding was”, Eppler said.

Shoemaker was drilled by a line drive off the bat of third baseman Kyle Seager, in which the ball was recorded at more than 105 miles per hour, according to MLB’s StatCast.

Shoemaker, who was pitching during the second inning, fell to the ground instantly after being hit. ‘He’s expected to make a full recovery from this’. He’s resting comfortably. Hopefully it looks like everything is taken care of.

“She’s a rock”, Eppler said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him”. They monitored him and decided they needed to do surgery.
