Serena stunned by Pliskova in US Open semis

At 186 consecutive weeks, the American’s most recent stay at No.1 ties the Open Era record for most consecutive weeks at No.1 held by Graf. And her 3 1/2-year reign at No. 1 in the WTA rankings is over, too, one week shy of what would have been yet another mark.

Monfils had two break points at 5-3 to get the set back on serve, but Djokovic saved them to finally close it out.

“Of course, now everybody will try to beat me and have nothing to lose”, Kerber said. “I’m really happy to be there and even have the chance to play in the final here”.

Kerber’s win broke a 11-match win streak for Pliskova dating back to her Cincinnati opener almost a month ago.

Down two games in the third and on the ropes, Kerber showed her resilience and why she deserves to be at the top, coming up with two huge service breaks to take a 6-4 third set win and the title.

“I don’t believe it”. I know how she is playing.

Stan Wawrinka, of Switzerland, returns a shot to Kei Nishikori, of Japan, during the semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, in NY. I hope I don’t stop yet, that there is still one more step to go.

This was the 33rd major semifinal of Williams’ career, and the first for Pliskova, who beat the 34-year-old American’s older sister Venus in the fourth round after staving off a match point. “First, she has a match here that she’s focused on”.

But now she’s on an 11-match winning streak.

But on Thursday, she certainly looked the part of an up-and-comer with the strokes and demeanor to go far.

Kerber beat Karolina Pliskova 6-3 4-6 6-4 in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday to edge a nail-biting final and seal her second grand slam title this year.

In her third major final of the year, Rio Olympics silver medallist Kerber added the title in NY to her success at the Australian Open in January. “To be number one in the world, it sounds incredible”.

Pliskova had knocked out Serena Williams in the semi-final in NY but could not manage a repeat against Kerber, who becomes the first German US Open champion since Steffi Graf in 1996. But Kerber got to even more balls than Wozniacki in their match and typically returned them with interest, which nullified one of the Dane’s key strengths.

“I remember the Cincinnati final”. This is also her 14 year on the WTA tour and she has played in 23 tour finals, so she is completely used to the pressure and the expectation and knows how to deal with the nerves.

Facing an opponent who occasionally played as if he had somewhere better to be, Novak Djokovic reached his 21st Grand Slam final and seventh at the U.S. Open with a freaky 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils on Friday. But he started to find his form in a quarterfinal victory over 2009 U.S. Open champ Juan Martin del Potro.

The 28-year-old has returned the favour in NY as her victory preserves two of Graf’s long-lasting records.

The temperature was in the low 80s, and the air was muggy and still, and Williams kept using the pleats of her black-and-pink skirt to wipe her sweaty palms between points. Usually content to play defense, Wozniacki found herself trying to force the issue and made an uncharacteristic 26 unforced errors. This time Kerber has the No.1 ranking already secured, and she comes into the final having not lost a set all tournament. Williams said she had been hampered by a sore left knee since earlier in the tournament. Kerber also played for the championship at Wimbledon, where she lost to Williams.

“When you’re injured, you’re thinking of other things when you should be just playing and thinking of your shots”. Like, I was making errors that I never make, and definitely I didn’t make in this tournament in particular.
