The day of September 11, 2001 started like any other

The US in the statement released by its embassy in Nigeria said, “Sadly, tragic events throughout the world have shown the ongoing horrific impact of terrorism in Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, France, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Belgium, among many other countries”.

Acquaviva said he thinks of Paul daily, but the anniversary of the attacks remains a special day.

A visitor center is to be built sometime in the future, featuring exhibits which describe the events that transpired that fateful day, along with celebrating the lives of the victims and explaining how the world works towards preventing another September 11, according to the Memorial’s official website. “It was tough and I couldn’t go [to the Pentagon]”. Even today’s seniors were toddlers then, so they have no memory of the attacks. “Once it happened, it became a crime scene”.

Nineteen hijackers died in the attack, later claimed by Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, which led directly to the US war in Afghanistan and indirectly to the invasion of Iraq. There also will be six moments of silence marking the times of tragedies at the World Trade Center site, the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93. On Sept. 11, I told New Yorkers, ‘I want you to emerge stronger from this.’ My words were partially a hope and partially an observation that people in New York City handle big things better than little things. To some they evoke still vivid images of United Airlines Flight 175 as it crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03 a.m. – the North Tower already tattered and smoking from where the first airliner struck – and the gut-wrenching emotions that washed over a nation in shock for days and weeks afterward. “Patriotism and heroism” were on display that day, Felt said. All the phone lines were busy as people tried to reach loved ones. But on the day itself, “bringing the focus back to why we did all this – which is to honor those that were lost – is something very intentional”, he said, as reported by Time. “It changed everything. It just put us all on edge and it started a war, and [now] it’s 15 years”.

The 9/11 Memorial Museum will be open exclusively for family members.

Referring to the Pentagon, he said anyone used to be able to walk right in asking for a tour, but after 9/11, “they locked that place down”. “We know that you will continue to make all Americans rightfully proud of their great American military”.

He said xenophobia and the fear of terrorism also escalated after 9/11.

“For them, it’s not a current event, it’s history”, said Mitchell High School teacher Doug Thomas, “so we have to teach it that way”. He remembers spending the anniversary with his students as they talked and shared their still-raw emotions.

Davis said he still feels the pain from 9/11.
