Braun homers in 9th, Brewers drop Cardinals in playoff race
Adam Wainwright tries to do something he hasn’t done in almost two months Saturday – win a game at Busch Stadium when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Milwaukee Brewers.

Grichuk made a flawless throw to the plate to cut down Jake Elmore trying to score from second in the eighth. He was helped by double plays in the second and seventh and Grichuk’s throw in the eighth. Instead, Perez was called out and ejected, and Milwaukee’s relief pitching staff collapsed, allowing all five of the Cardinals’ runs in the eighth inning. Obviously, we saw that (Saturday) night.
Keon Broxton’s 429-foot home run in the fifth gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead.
Davies had little room for error after Chris Carter’s sacrifice fly in the first inning gave the Brewers their only run in six innings off St. Louis starter Luke Weaver. He has also scored seven runs. In his last 16 games, Arcia has been one of the hottest bats in the lineup, slashing a monster.358/.433/.642 while adding eight runs, three home runs, and nine RBI. He retired his final 13 batters and 19 of 20. He has 22 strikeouts in his last three starts. Thornburg worked 1.2 innings of hitless, walkless ball, and struck out the Cards in order in the ninth.
DODGERS 5, MARLINS 0 Los Angeles pitcher Rich Hill was removed after throwing seven flawless innings against host Miami in a Los Angeles victory. He improved to 3-0 in four starts against Milwaukee.
TWINS 2, INDIANS 1 (12) Joe Mauer’s single off Joe Colon scored Brian Dozier from second in the 12th inning to lift Minnesota over visiting Cleveland.
Dozier hit a two-out single and advanced to second when Colon (1-1) was called for a balk by homeplate umpire Vic Carapazza.
But the biggest addition to the team as of late is the Brewers top prospect Orlando Arcia, who after a slow first three weeks of his major-league career, has been on fire.
Royals closer Wade Davis gave up a single to Tyler Saladino and a double to Adam Eaton to lead off the ninth before Melky Cabrera’s infield single cut the deficit to one.
Braun hit a solo home run in the ninth inning and the Brewers beat St. Louis 2-1 on Sunday, dropping the Cardinals back in the NL wild-card race.
MARINERS 14, ATHLETICS 3 Felix Hernandez pitched six scoreless innings to continue his dominance at the Coliseum and visiting Seattle routed Oakland.
“We know the importance of each game”, said outfielder Stephen Piscotty, who hit one of the Cardinals’ two two-run homers Friday night.
NEW YORK – Gary Sanchez homered and nearly hit another while Tampa Bay was trying to intentionally walk him, leading Masahiro Tanaka and the hard-charging New York Yankees to their season-best seventh straight win, 5-1 over the Rays on Saturday.
Given that nearly all of these players will be strong considerations for the starting lineup next year – plus the soon-to-be addition of Lewis Brinson, who hit.382/.387/.618 with four home runs, 20 RBI, and four stolen bases in only 23 games with Triple-A Colorado Springs – the picture of Milwaukee’s future offense is becoming much clearer and more than all else, much more exciting.

HOUSTON – Rookie Alex Bregman homered, Collin McHugh combined with his bullpen on a two-hitter and the Astros beat the Cubs 2-1 Saturday.
