Galaxy Note 7 has been released already in ten countries, exceeding the company’s expectation for its demand.
After Samsung Electronics Co. announced a global recall of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to a battery problem, its Taiwan branch said Friday Taiwanese consumers can have their phones replaced unconditionally starting in mid-September.
2degrees said its customers had three options: exchange, pick up an alternative device until the new Note 7 model arrives, or receive a full refund.
The 34-year-old living in the port city of Busan said that she was bruised when she rushed out of bed after her phone burst into flames, filling her bedroom with smoke stinking of chemicals.
Weighing 169 grams with a thickness of 7.9 millimeters, the Galaxy Note 7 has a 5.7-inch AMOLED screen with a Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440, or 515 ppi. She did not accept the compensation. Samsung said China is not affected by the issue because it used another battery supplier.
Samsung said it will be a total recall and the replacement process will start over the next two weeks, at the latest. There have been no reports of injuries related to the problem.
South Korean news agency Yonhap had previously reported that there have been five claims around the world of Note 7s catching fire while charging. Company officials did not reply to questions about how Samsung determined which phones are deemed safe and which require further testing. The South Korean company had 22%, ahead of Apple’s 12%. The South Korea-based company has suspended shipments of the phones since early this week even though the exact cause of the decision has not yet been confirmed, according to reports. Other photos and accounts, other than Park’s, could not be immediately verified.
Samsung Taiwan noted that replacements will be limited to officially distributed devices in Taiwan and that consumers must display the complete package and proof of purchase to get new devices.
“Every year, there have been accidents of battery explosions but it is the first time that six or seven cases happened within such a short period after the launch of a new product”, said Ha Joon-doo, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Corp.
