Tropical storm warnings stretch from DE to MA, including New York City.
Locally, Storm Team 4 reported the greatest risk for unsafe surge is along the western shoreline of Long Island Sound. It was expected to stall over the water before weakening again to a tropical storm by Tuesday.
Those who stayed awoke to sunshine, but stronger-than-usual winds and choppy seas. Hermine’s center was about 230 miles southeast of the eastern tip of Long Island.
Governor Rick Scott toured the affected areas in Florida including Levy, Taylor, and Pasco counties on the Gulf Coast and surveyed the damage caused by the flooding from the tropical storm.
Post-tropical cyclone Hermine is expected to bring one to two inches of rain to MA, and as much as two feet of storm surge along the coast of Long Island, by Wednesday as it moves past the northeast coast of the United States, according to forecasters.
MIAMI – The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Newton has strengthened into a hurricane.
As of 2am Tuesday, Hermine’s top sustained winds were steady at 65 mph – lower than Monday’s 70 mph – as it moved west-northwest at 9 mph.
The National Weather Service said a tropical storm warning remains in effect for New Jersey and DE, including Rehoboth Beach, which could experience wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour and life-threatening storm surges during high tide late Sunday and into Monday. Whatever the heck it is, it’s already caused damage in Florida and power outages in Georgia and South and North Carolina, and is expected to produce life threatening storm surges in New Jersey and NY over the course of today.
Storm-surge inundation levels of no more than one to three feet were expected in coastal areas.
“It’s the best place we’ve been in Florida, nicest place”, Nick Clarke said.
On Saturday, high winds tipped over an 18-wheeler, killing its driver and shutting down a bridge in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Two people have died in the storm. In Florida, a homeless man in Marion County was hit by a falling tree and was killed.
“People knew that it was going to hit here so they changed their plans and it doesn’t seem like it’s been as busy this weekend as normal”, server Kenn Hendricks said.

The bulk of that was in battered Tallahassee, Fla., where 21,500 customers, including homes and businesses, were without power Monday afternoon, the city said.
