No. 25 Miami knows a huge test awaits at Appalachian State

Florida Atlantic: The Owls had chances early, getting into Miami territory five times in the first half but only coming away with three points.

Walton rushed for career highs of 155 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 25 Miami shook off a slow start to beat Florida Atlantic 38-10 on Saturday night.

Miami: The Hurricanes regressed in the first half, plagued again by the mistakes that doomed them in past seasons. “We don’t even have to say that to our guys”, Richt said. With a TD last week, Walton now has five touchdowns in just two games this season. This Owls only had one turnover this year but had just over half the amount of yards.

“We played bad”, Berrios said.

“We came here to win”. Whatever it was last year, that was last year.

Numerous names FAU will face this year are the same, but the tape of last season’s matchup is irrelevant to Owls coach Charlie Partridge.

Since July at the ACC’s annual Kickoff Event, Richt has said he expects Saturday’s game in Boone, which sold out in under an hour when tickets went on sale, to be a challenge for the Hurricanes.

“It’s really good to see that we’ve made big improvements on defense”, Jenkins said.

“Are we excited to play Miami?” “It’s a great opportunity”. Kaaya is seven completions from tying Kyle Wright (478) for No. 5 all-time in Miami history, and his career completion rate (exactly 60 percent) is just behind Jacory Harris (60.09) for third-best among Hurricane QBs. CB Adrian Colbert and DT Courtel Jenkins are out this week with knee injuries, though the hope is that Colbert (who had a pick in his Miami debut last week) will be back in time for Georgia Tech on October 1.

“Miami team doctors are still evaluating the extent of his injury”, Symonds said.

While the Hurricanes managed nice blocking for running backs Mark Walton and Joe Yearby, both of whom rushed for more than 100 yards for the second time in as many weeks, quarterback Brad Kaaya was pressured throughout the night, with Miami’s offensive line not always providing the kind of protection he needed. In that one, junior quarterback Brad Kaaya threw for four touchdowns and had a 203 quarterback rating.

Expect fixing that to be a focus as Miami starts preparing for Appalachian State, who, in its first game, managed two sacks against No. 15 Tennessee, which needed overtime to secure a 20-13 win.

PUNTING MATCHUP: FAU punter Dalton Schomp is a field-changer. Florida’s big win over Kentucky could get the Gators back in the ranking, though No. 22 Oklahoma State’s “loss” – the Cowboys fell to Central Michigan on the last play of the game, though officials later said the winning score should not have counted – may be enough to keep the Hurricanes ranked.

VERSUS IN-STATE: Miami is 30-2 in non-conference games against in-state schools since 2000. Partridge is also a South Florida native, growing up in Plantation – in between Boca Raton and Miami.
