Officers responded to the 3600 block of Village Avenue after an individual called 911 to say a drunk man was hitting his girlfriend in an apartment.
The officers were not injured. The condition of the man, who was transported to a local hospital after receiving emergency treatment on scene, was not known.
Residents nearby told the TV station they heard three or four gun shots.
The officer who fired the weapon will most likely be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, he added.
An interagency team is leading the investigation.

Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said Saturday morning she had no further details to release. Regional investigators who specialize in reviewing officer-involved shootings will investigate, Stocker said.
