A historic covered bridge in Salisbury was heavily damaged by a suspicious fire.

Swamp Road in Cornwall to Creek Road in Salisbury was closed as the bridge was impassible.

“During that 60-second phone call (to report the fire) the bridge went from just smoking on the opposite side from us, to entirely engulfed”, Isabel Lower told the Addison Independent.

“I was fighting back tears, you know it is always a shame a historical structure you know from that long ago”, said Bingham.

The investigation remains open, Vermont State Police are asking that anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the bridge Saturday to contact the Rutland State Barracks.

Police are investigating the origin and cause of the fire, and have asked for the public’s help.

Cornwall Fire Chief Dennis Rheaume says the blaze was most likely arson given that there were no lightning strikes in the area and there is no electricity along the wooden bridge. There is no timetable for when the road will reopen.
