Cespedes, Lugo lead Mets to 10-3 win over Braves

The players wore NYPD hats to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 during a pregame ceremony. Cabrera finished with three hits for the Mets while James Loney and Jose Reyes had two each. They immediately scored a run against Williams Perez, then spent most of the afternoon battering an overmatched Atlanta pitching staff.

“I’ve talked to some people who have toured it, and they said it’s really going to be nice”, Mets manager Terry Collins said about the Braves’ new ballpark. “I’m going to throw it in the strike zone – quality pitches, quality location and let them get themselves out”.

Yoenis Cespedes hit a grand slam, Seth Lugo won his fourth straight start and the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 10-3 on Sunday.

Pierzynski, 39, wouldn’t say after Saturday night’s 10-inning victory over the Mets if he’s played his last game. St. Louis’ 2-1 loss to Milwaukee moved NY one-half game ahead of the Cardinals for the second NL wild-card spot.

Two innings later, a one-out walk by Lugo ignited a rally, and Cespedes reached the 30-homer plateau for the second time in his career by swatting a grand slam into the left field seats for a 5-0 edge.

Mets: Lugo (3-2) will make his fifth start.

“In minor leagues, I’d try to throw too hard or make too good (of a pitch) and I’d end up falling behind and have to come back with guys in scoring position”, Lugo said.

Atlanta loaded the bases with no outs in a 6-1 game, but Lugo induced a popout from former Met Anthony Recker, and an inning-ending double-play grounder from Dansby Swanson.

Cespedes drove in five runs Sunday, driving in Asdrubal Cabrera, who had tripled, in the first inning with a sacrifice fly.

INF Wilmer Flores suffered a neck contusion and had to leave Saturday’s game against the Braves after being thrown out at the plate by Nick Markakis trying to score in the eighth inning on a pitch single to right field by T.J. Rivera.

ANGELS 3, RANGERS 2: Andrelton Simmons hit two solo home runs, his second and third of the season, to lift host Los Angeles. He has four in his career.

Yoenis Cespedes put the Mets on his back from the get go. “This is a big stretch for us”. Alejandro De Aza followed with an RBI single of his own, making it 8-1, before Loney doubled home another run to make it 9-1. You can be sure Cespedes is shooting for 35 home runs and 95 RBIs in this opt-out year. The Mets finish 67-106 all-time here and are not unhappy to see the Braves move on.
