Dustin Johnson three clear at BMW Championship

World number two Dustin Johnson fired a five-under par 67 yesterday to win the US PGA’s BMW Championship by three strokes over England’s Paul Casey with a tournament scoring record.

Johnson made 24 birdies and three eagles throughout the week and jumped to the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.

CARMEL, Ind. – Jason Day withdrew during the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday for precautionary reasons after an ongoing back issue flared up when he went to put his tee in the ground at the ninth hole.

The injury was not considered serious, and Day was hopeful of being in Atlanta in two weeks for the Tour Championship and a shot at the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus.

Johnson played the 16 par-5s over four days in 15-under par, a tribute to his driving prowess, the combination of long and straight in a game when they’re seldom compatible.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence in every part of my game right now”, he said.

“I was glad to have those early in the round”, Castro said.

“I’m seeing the lines pretty well out here, I’ve got pretty good speed and it’s going where I’m looking”, Johnson said. “It was nice to make a birdie on four … and then hit some really nice wedge shots after the first few holes”.

The pair moved all-square when Johnson found sand off the third tee and saw his par-save lip-out, as Casey rolled in from eight feet for a second successive birdie.

Johnson is ranked No. 1 going into the Tour Championship and controls his own destiny when it comes to the FedEx Cup. J.B. Holmes is a further shot back, while Roberto Castro slipped to 12 under after a 74 and Adam Scott is joined by Matt Kuchar at 11 under. “I’m going to go out there and play good golf and see what happens”.

Moments after Casey converted an eagle at the par-five 15th to get to 20 under and within one of the lead, Johnson coaxed in a three from a similar distance to maintain his advantage.

DeChambeau earned $180,000. The 2015 NCAA and U.S. Amateur champion got into the field as a non-member with enough PGA Tour money to have placed in the top 200 in the FedEx Cup had he been eligible. “And this week the putter really worked”. While competing at the men’s Olympic golf tournament, where he finished tied for 37th, Fowler chose to add the Wyndham Championship to his schedule in an effort to make the U.S. Ryder Cup team on points.

Dustin Johnson walked down a corridor of fans, trying to touch the dozens of outstretched hands on both sides until he extended both arms into a massive wing span to accommodate as many as he could.

On Sunday, Day made a bogey at the second hole and double bogey at the par-3 third before a birdie at the par-5 fifth helped lift his spirits. As we all know, that can change in golf in the blink of an eye, and I’m sure Spieth is aiming to peak at East Lake and the Ryder Cup.
