Stan Wawrinka stuns Novak Djokovic to win US Open
Caroline Garcia, of France, returns a shot with partner Kristina Mladenovic, of France, during the women’s doubles final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, in NY. When we start five minutes before the match talking, last few things with Magnus, I start to cry.

Sep 11, 2016; New York, NY, USA; Novak Djokovic of Serbia returns a shot to Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in the championship match on day fourteen of the 2016 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
He said on the court during the trophy ceremony that he was “completely empty”. Again, was so much emotion with the crowd, with the atmosphere, with that stadium.
Did you know.Stan Wawrinka is a big game player? “It’s been incredible night again”. Stanislaus Wawrinka with the U.S. Open trophy after his upset win over defending champion Novak Djokovic yesterday. The duo last met at the finals of 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open, where the results emerged out the same. In the near four-hour match, is a flawless 3-0 now in Grand Slam finals, having taken the Men’s Singles title at both the 2015 French Open, defeating Djokovic, and 2014 Aussie Open, defeating Rafael Nadal.
Wawrinka became the first player over 30 to win the Open since Pete Sampras in 2002, and the oldest to win it since Ken Rosewall in 1970. Three, just like Wawrinka. The win marks Wawrinka’s third grand slam.
“I love my sport”, Wawrinka says.
And so Djokovic moves on down the road now lugging a personal record of 12-9 in Grand Slam finals with him. He had won just four times in 23 matches against Djokovic before Sunday, but one of those wins happened to be the French Open final in 2015.
Now boasting as many Grand Slam titles as world number two Murray, Wawrinka isn’t planning to slow down, and he seemed a bit affronted that anyone might think he should. “I was struggling with that shot and with the motion, the movement and on the serve with the technique because of what I carried into this tournament”, said Djokovic. “I would definitely accept it”.
Wawrinka hits a heavy ball - not a parabolic, Rafael Nadal sort of heavy, but in the way that a boulder falling from the sky is heavy. But then he faltered at Wimbledon, losing in the third round to American Sam Querrey and breaking his streak of 30 match wins at the majors.
After a shaky start to the match, Wawrinka started to find his form late in the first set, and that continued in the second. Djokovic broke in the seventh game to get back on serve.
Wawrinka complained to the chair umpire that he should have been forced to wait until the change of ends, but Djokovic was allowed a six-minute break.
Djokovic led 5-2 in the first set, but Wawrinka rallied to forge a tiebreaker that Djokovic won easily. USA Today Sports / Reuters Wawrinka often points to his temple to remind himself to play smart.
“Today, I was trying to stay with him”, Wawrinka admitted of playing Djokovic.
He took a medical time-out before Wawrinka’s serve in the fourth, which angered his opponent, although there appeared no lingering bad feeling at the finish as the pair shared a warm embrace.
“You came out on top, you were the better player, tougher mentally”.
In a match that lasted nearly four hours, the Serb, who is one of the greatest returners to have played tennis, came up short in that aspect, converting only three out of 17 break points. “In the fourth set I had some pain, but the most important thing was not to show anything”.
