Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, pledging a major new military buildup, and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton get a chance on Wednesday to show how they would lead the US armed forces as commander-in-chief.

Hillary Clinton has responded to comments made by Donald Trump on United States network NBC News.
“He’s been a leader far more than our president has been a leader”, Mr Trump said of the Russian president.
“It is beyond anyone’s imagination to have a candidate for president praising a Russian autocrat like Vladimir Putin”, she said. The Republican candidate again cast doubt on whether Russian Federation was behind the hacking of the Democratic National Committee, a belief at odds with USA intelligence officials.
Despite Pence siding with Trump on Putin’s leadership compared to Obama, he did break with the Republican presidential nominee this week on a separate issue related to Obama.
“After Labor Day, as people are really looking at this race, a ticket that is praising a dictator who is hurting his country, hurting his people, as some example of leadership, is terrible”, Kaine, the running mate of Hillary Clinton, said after being asked about the controversy over Putin.
“I think when he calls me brilliant I’ll take the compliment, ok?” added the businessman.

Clinton also pointed out that Trump had once supported the invasion.
But he did say that the military could do more under a Trump administration than it has under an Obama administration when asked why the military would have different ideas under Trump than it does now.

Pence refused to say whether Trump would consider sending in significant ground troops to the Middle East, saying he would not “signal to the enemy” his plans.

David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University, said Clinton and Trump both face tests in convincing voters that they are up to the task.
