How Phyllis Schlafly Paved The Way For Donald Trump

The Eagle Forum called Schlafly “an iconic American leader whose love for America was surpassed only by her love of God and her family”.

Phyllis Schlafly was one of the most polarizing figures in American public life, a self-described housewife who was called “the first lady of the conservative movement”. One of the more noteworthy aspects to what will be her legacy was a victory after a 10-year battle against the Equal Rights Amendment.

She was still a conservative force and popular speaker in her 90s, endorsing Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 and praising his policy on immigration.

“Mother, writer, lawyer and president-founder of the Eagle Forum, her contributions to the conservative movement can not be understated”.

Please remember her and her family in your prayers. Without her unwavering commitment, the Equal Rights Amendment would have been ratified 35 years ago – with all of its implications for enshrining abortion as a constitutional right.

Schlafly argued that an ERA would harm American housewives, warning that it would make it more hard for mothers to obtain custody in divorce cases and that it would do away with alimony and child support requirements.

Schlafly caused a rift in her own political organization with her endorsement of Donald Trump in March during the Republican primary. She also authored almost two dozen books and wrote a syndicated weekly column. We honor Phyllis for the lessons that she taught us all. In 1964, she published A Choice Not an Echo, which sold 3 million copies based on the resonance of her argument that a milquetoast Republican establishment needed to become more populist and more conservative if it wanted to win national elections in the future. Her strong opposition to communism, abortion, feminism and an overall focus on the nuclear family, made her a darling of the emerging conservative movement. She was the first to recognize the importance of social issues in politics, and she gave conservative values a powerful voice when no one else thought it possible.

Phyllis Schlafly was the woman who led the fight against the Equal Rights Amendment. “Today is a day to celebrate her awesome legacy and to remember the profound difference she made in the conduct of American public policy”. She fought the good fight and wasn’t afraid of a tough fight. She is survived by her six children, sixteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Conservatives loved her. She spoke her mind and defended traditional values. “Thank you, Phyllis. We will not grow tired”.
