Crews fighting a wildfire near John Day, Oregon, will spend Tuesday trying to strengthen control lines to prevent further damage to homes.

“But naturally, we are a little bit wary of what’s going to happen”, Greendeer said.

There’s fire on literally every side of Lake Chelan and so there are many different fronts. Oregon, however, was exceeding its averages for the number of fires and the acreage burned on land protected by the state Department of Forestry.

First Creek is actively spreading west, burning in brush and timber, 8 miles northwest of Chelan.

Elsewhere, the Kah-Nee-Ta Resort in Central Oregon reopened after a wildfire forced 400 guests to evacuate as a precaution last week.

In Montana, the biggest fire burned 21 square miles (54 sq km), with flames blaming in Glacier National Park and on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Visitors to the Diamond Lake area in southern Oregon were told to prepare to leave if the 2,971-acre National Creek Complex burning 10 miles southwest of the lake spread.

Fire officials say that over the weekend smoke from the fire drifted into the San Francisco Bay Area and especially east of the city, where it was trapped in valleys for several days, causing hazy skies and breathing difficulties for some. Level 3 notices require people to evacuate immediately. About 600 business and residential customers were still without power Monday morning, down from 9,000 on Saturday, according to the district.

“It’s like the fire season gas pedal has been pushed to the floor in a really short period of time, and that’s stressed our resources”, Frederick said. Crews have been able to hold the fire to 13,800 acres. As of Monday afternoon, only one had been contained. Two hundred active-duty troops will spend most of this week training, managers at the fire center said, and they will be deployed to a fire on August. 23. Firefighters continue to fight 11 other fires in Oregon, including the Cornet-Windy Ridge fire near Baker City, which has burned more than 150 square miles and is only 35 percent contained. “There wasn’t a lot of wind and it didn’t get hot”, he said.
