Clinton backtracked on her “basket of deplorables” comment on Saturday. Obama said that small-town voters “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations”.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says she regrets describing half of her Republican rival Donald Trump’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables” in a speech, as the Trump campaign tried to capitalise on what it considered a major gaffe by the former secretary of state.
But Trump’s vice presidential running mate Mike Pence said she had disrespected voters.
