South Sudan faces ‘unprecedented’ level of hunger, UN says
The report by The Sentry, which was co-founded by actor George Clooney, says that in 2015 it began “to follow the money that has been and continues to be amassed” by networks loyal to either Kiir or Machar.

“There is no evidence to suggest that more weapons are required in South Sudan for the government to achieve a stable security environment”, the United Nations monitors said. These included prior approval of troop contributors and the weapons carried by them. There is no sign of significant arms procurement by the opposition in recent months, the report says.
A statement issued Monday said the latest group of 152 South Sudanese were evacuated and disarmed on Sunday, bringing the total to 634. Two truckloads of ammunition were transferred from neighboring Uganda in June.
“It is not clear from now available information whether this project has proceeded in the intervening period”, they added.
The UN security council has threatened to impose an arms embargo if South Sudan’s government doesn’t comply with a plan to deploy an extra 4,000 peacekeepers to protect civilians.
The visiting diplomats also pressed South Sudan’s government to hold accountable soldiers who have been accused of rampaging through a hotel compound popular with foreigners in the July chaos.
The report adds: “This attack was well coordinated and can not be considered as an opportunistic act of violence and robbery”.
Tens of thousands of people in South Sudan have been killed and more than 2 million displaced since December 2013, when a power struggle between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Machar evolved into a military conflict.
Last weekend, the Security Council visited South Sudan to show solidarity with its people and to see firsthand the devastating effects on innocent civilians of almost three years of conflict.
The monitors said in the report – which was requested by the Security Council – that “the actions and policies of the two major parties” pose the most severe security threats to the peace deal and the transitional government.
The report also said officials have focused on “mobilising their respective tribes”, which has worsened ethnic tensions.
