Reed earns Ryder Cup spot as McIlroy finishes on even par

Patrick Reed didn’t see it that way.

The 30-year-old former Michigan State coach made $144,000 to jump from 30th to fourth on the money list with $281,808 and earn a PGA Tour card as top-25 finisher.

Also the 2010 victor, the German star took advantage of Austin and Sutherland both finding bunkers on the 18th in the playoff. Reed went from a two-shot deficit early in the round to a three-shot lead with three holes to play, and he hung in from there for a 1-under 70 and a one-shot victory over Sean O’Hair and Emiliano Grillo. “I’ve had it feels like 100 top 10s this year”.

Ariya, of Bangkok, also kept her flawless 54-hole record intact as she has won each time she has led this year heading into the fourth round. Unfortunately I didn’t quite make the scores I wanted to down the last but it was enough to get the job done.

” … It was patience all week”. Only time will tell of course what the legacy of Reed will be, but it’s hard to imagine someone so good and so confident in his own ability not going on to even greater, more high-profile wins.

“It’s like, all right, what do I need to do to get over this hump?”

It’s the type of putt that Reed holed with regularity during his memorable Ryder Cup debut two years ago at Gleneagles, and a test he’ll surely face again next month at Hazeltine.

“This week I don’t think there was a tee shot that I felt comfortable over, to be honest”, he said after the final round.

The day also included Sung Kang’s 64, which matched the course record.

Dustin Johnson, Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker and Brooks Koepka already made the team. Love will make three captain’s picks after the BMW Championship on September 12 and the final one on September 25 after the Tour Championship.

Patrick Reed had a crystal trophy, a clear shot at the richest payoff in golf and a spot on the Ryder Cup team.

“(Hoping for) sweet revenge and hopefully the cup comes back home”.

Thomas Pieters has thrown a wrench into what otherwise might have been an easy decision for European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke. That I was the bubble boy. It was a huge goal to get back played having played so well my first time, but unfortunately the cup didn’t come back with us.

Reed had gone 55 tournaments worldwide since starting 2015 with a victory at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Reed took the outright lead when Fowler bogeyed the 11th.

Still, the mustachioed and colorfully-attired American tumbled all the way into a three-way tie for seventh place at 6-under par by bogeying four of his final eight holes – including a double on 16 – after posting only one bogey through the first three-and-a-half rounds.

Reed began the final day in second place one stroke behind Fowler.

Fowler tied for seventh and moved up one spot to No. 11 in the standings.

“My main focus was winning”, Fowler said. Just made some not-so-good swings at a bad time.

“I’m just trying to win the tournament”, Fowler said when asked if he knew where he stood. He moved to No. 9 in the world ranking, and No. 1 in the FedEx Cup, and is assured of being in the top five who only have to win the Tour Championship to take the $10 million.

“I wouldn’t be able to do it without my team, with my wife (Justine, who used to caddie for him until they had their first child) out here, trekking around this place and Callaway fine-tuning my driver this week”. I didn’t drive the ball the way I needed to coming in.
