Alex Smith completes comeback with overtime TD run
“With the comeback and that play on third down, there were a lot of emotions”. The Chargers had not only outgained the Chiefs 219-105, but Rivers – who was boosted by a strong running game averaging 4.9 yards on 14 carries – was carving them up, as he’d completed 16 of 20 passes for 151 yards. The Chiefs rushed 19 times for 83 yards, a respectable 4.4-yard average, after a middling first half.

Smith was dealing on the drive, too, as he completed touch passes downfield to tight end Travis Kelce and Spencer Ware that extended the drive.
Kelce said at that point he could feel the energy level of the Chargers drop while the Chiefs finally found their focus. Somehow, the Chiefs only allowed six points in the second half.

The Chiefs’ defense showed signs during the preseason that the start of the regular season would be a struggle. They almost scored another touchdown, but thanks to a Rivers overthrow, they settled for another field goal, making it 27-10. Deciding against a punt that would have pinned the Chiefs deep in their own territory, McCoy tried a 54-yard field goal.
Allen was making a cut toward the sideline on a passing route when he went down. Then, after forcing a three-and-out, Spencer Ware finished a four-play drive with a touchdown plunge to knot the game at 27. “I’m just glad to have him”. They should be inspired to beat the Chiefs after they were embarrassed at home by Kansas City in a 30-0 wild-card loss in January. We had been doing a very good job all game long, but we didn’t do a good job after that.
Ware finished with 70 yards rushing and had seven catches for 129 yards, giving the Chiefs a big boost without Jamaal Charles.
It was a remarkable turnaround for the Chiefs.
BUCCANEERS 31, FALCONS 24- Jameis Winston bounced back from an early interception to throw four touchdown passes, and Tampa Bay claimed a winning record for the first since 2012 by opening the season with a victory over the Falcons.
The Chargers scored three touchdowns in three drives with Allen on the field, and were 6-6 on third downs. “You’ve got to give them credit, they had an awesome fourth quarter and we didn’t do anything to counter”. Smith took his third sack of the day on the first possession of the third quarter, but the pass protection firmed up after that. Only Ware was able to consistently generate offense.

Allen missed the final eight games last season with a lacerated kidney, and now could be out the rest of this season. “Everybody with eyes who saw the game has got to know, we have to close it”. He went on to say that once they woke up, it was a heck of a win. The offensive lineman appeared to limp off the field following the game.
