British Airways IT Glitch, Airport Protest Delay Air Travel in London

A fire and failure of a piece of equipment at Delta’s Atlanta headquarters on August 8 had caused a massive outage of the airline’s computer systems, leading to three days of heavy cancellations and delays.

“Check in may take a bit longer than usual, so we would encourage customers to check in online before they reach the airport“, the airline advised passengers.

As well as Gatwick Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, San Francisco International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are among those now affected.

British Airways passengers were hit by hours-long delays after an IT glitch affected worldwide check-in systems at airports – including Heathrow and Gatwick.

In July, the British Airways apologised to passengers who faced long delays at check-in at Heathrow and Gatwick. About three weeks earlier, Southwest Airlines had seen a system failure that had led to the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights.

A professional poker player from London indicated that she was queued for her flight in Las Vegas for more than two and a half hours.

“We are sorry for the delay to their journeys”, it said.

Connectivity between SA and London is on the increase – and not only through British Airways. The campaign group Black Lives Matter said its activists were behind the protest. Police said late on Tuesday morning they had arrested all nine and the airline was preparing to resume flights.

In London, City Airport in the east of the capital also delayed flights.

Staff with clipboards were writing manual boarding passes for passengers, one delayed traveller at Seattle Airport said.

When asked exactly what and where the technical problems are, the spokeswoman said: “It is patchy”.
