The concepts of sacrifice, giving and family are ties that bind the holidays of every religion, and this week, the Muslim community celebrates all during Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, a gathering of sharing, prayer and camaraderie.
For Muslims, Eid al-Adha commemorates the day when Prophet Abraham was going to sacrifice his son but was instructed by God to offer an animal instead. On the day of this holy festival, the meat of an animal that is sacrificed should be divided into 3 parts, one-third for the family, one-third for the relatives and one-third for the poor and needy. Ibrahim dreamt of being commanded by the God to sacrifice the person who is dearest to him in order to check his obedience.
President Rodrigo Duterte greeted the Filipino Muslim community for the celebration of the Islamic holiday of Eid’l Adha on Monday, expressing gratitude for their support of the government and the peace process. The holiday begins on the 9th day of Dhu Al Hijja – the last month of the hijri calendar.
Muslims are one of the largest religious minority groups in Georgia.
Does this merit any changes to how Muslims should be commemorating our holiday?
The festival was also celebrated across Africa, with the faithful in countries such as Somalia and Kenya attending mass prayers. Some people will sacrifice animals themselves and others will delegate the deed to somebody else, many times, overseas, and the meat from the animal are donated to contribute to refugee aid or to help alleviate the drought in Africa. The day also marks the end of the annual pilgrimage of Hajj. “So, this festival brings us together”, he said.
