New Miss America has advice for Trump, Clinton: ‘Compromise’
Shields is a proud Kappa Kappa Gamma member, and got a sweet homecoming sendoff at her sorority house before she left for the Miss America competition in Atlantic City.

Shields impressed the pageant judges with her jazz dance routine and was asked an onstage question about Hillary Clinton (“Hillary Clinton – what do you think?”) shortly before she won the title.
She answered politically correct, stating both candidates are doing a good job, but need to watch what they’re doing because they’re actions are held to a higher standard.
Afterward, she told reporters that she wants both candidates to focus on compromise.
Shields, who succeeded the 2016 Miss America victor, Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell, had some stiff competition at this year’s pageant. Now, with the crown returning to Arkansas, many who know Shields are applauding her hard work. Miss Washington Alicia Nicole Cooper came in fourth, and fifth place was awarded to Miss Mississippi Laura Lee Lewis.
During the pageant, Shields fielded a question about the 2016 election with diplomatic vagueness. “I feel like that’s every dancer’s secret dream is to be a backup dancer for Beyoncé, especially with her new tour”.
Miss Texas Caroline Carothers competes in the talent component during the 96th Miss America Pageant at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Sept. 11, 2016. Our country was founded on compromise. Cantrell placed the crowned to the newest Miss America during the coronation. Swanson leaned over to say something to another contestant and her legs came open, flashing her underwear to millions of viewers.
“Every single girl here would do an awesome job as Miss America”, she said.
Miss Missouri O’Flaherty, 23, was eliminated when the top 15 contestants were announced. It includes contestants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The pageant began in Atlantic City in 1921 as a way to extend the summer tourist season beyond Labor Day weekend.
