What to expect from the World Cup of Hockey

“Toronto is such a great hockey city and the passion of Canada with the World Cup, to have that type of atmosphere in a building where you can’t run and hide, that certainly came into our thinking in how we want to play and some of the personnel we brought in.”. Andersen will miss three to four weeks with an upper-body injury, meaning New York Islanders goalies Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss will compete to start for the team that’s a mix of players from Slovakia, Germany, Denmark, Slovenia, Switzerland, France, Austria and Norway.

Shirley, a native of Saskatoon, Sask., was part of Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team for a three-games series against the United States in August.

“The best thing about a position like this is the support and character you have in the room”.

For guys who have already established themselves as elite starting netminders in their own markets, the dynamic here at the US training camp is both challenging and more than a little nerve-wracking. I’m guessing personal pride would make that game incredibly intense.

“There’s so little time to prove yourself and get in any kind of rhythm”, said longtime National Hockey League goalie Darren Pang, who is providing analysis for ESPN during the World Cup.

Vlasic was instrumental in Team Canada’s gold medal in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

He said: ‘It is hockey, but I also think it is a huge platform for us to represent our country, especially in today’s world, with everything is going on’.

“There’s certainly not enough time to make a true determination of who wins a job”, Tortorella admitted on Tuesday after the team’s second day of on-ice workouts. Slovakia and the Czech Republic were a combined 0-6 and were outscored 13-36.

Canada has some of the best cottage properties in the world – and it’s not just Canadians who are. I don’t coach him but I watch him during our year and I listen to him and I see maturity about him. I’ll enjoy it because it involves the best hockey players on the planet.

With the two teams set to return to the Canadian Tire Centre Saturday at 7 p.m., coach Mike Babcock is champing at the bit to get a look at exactly where everybody is going to fit before the World Cup officially gets under way September 17 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

I’m curious to see how Todd McLellan will handle Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins once the tournament is over. If North America makes the playoffs, McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins won’t arrive in Edmonton until September 26 at the earliest. Should any of his players try it, they’ll be disciplined. Anisimov and Panarin spent pretty much the entire 2015-16 season together with the Blackhawks, and Namestnikov is a budding up-and-comer. McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins need to be rested and healthy.

They are not playing small roles, either.
