Former Centenary baseball player Seth Lugo continues to find success as a starting pitcher for the NY Mets. The Mets also sit 1 1/2 games behind the San Francisco Giants for the top Wild Card spot with 19 games left to play. On Sunday against the Atlanta Braves, he won his fourth consecutive game in as many starts, allowing six hits and two earned runs in seven innings of work.
NY led 1-0 in the first when Asdrubal Cabrera tripled and scored on Cespedes’ groundout.
Two innings later, a one-out walk by Lugo ignited a rally, and Cespedes reached the 30-homer plateau for the second time in his career by swatting a grand slam into the left field seats for a 5-0 edge. The homer by Cespedes was the only earned run against Gant, who was making his second start after missing almost eight weeks with an oblique strain. The Mets finished 67-106 (.387) in 20 seasons at Turner Field.
Players and coaches stood along the baselines before the game as the Braves held a 13-minute ceremony to mark the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
Williams Perez struggled again as the Atlanta Braves dropped their final matchup against the New York Mets at Turner Field 10-3.
Sunday’s ceremony included a 21-gun salute, a color guard from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, flag bearers from the U.S. Army, an honor guard from the Smyrna, Georgia, police and a contingent of bagpipes and drums.
Corey Dickerson, Logan Forsythe and Brad Miller homered as the Tampa Bay Rays ended the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak with a 4-2 win. He has hit safely in 28 of his last 29 games since August 1 and is hitting.362 over that span.
Terry Collins on Cespedes: “He wants to win”. Pierzynski, 39, wouldn’t say after Saturday night’s 10-inning victory if he’s played his last game. None of Pierzynski’s belongings had been removed.

After taking two out of three from the Braves, the Mets now head to Washington, D.C., to open a three-game series against the first-place Nationals Monday at Nationals Park.
