Instagram update allows users to filter abusive comments

The photo-sharing social network announced on Monday users will have moderation tools for comments left on their pictures and videos.

After you’ve used Instagram‘s keyword moderation tool, you and your followers will no longer be able to see comments (on your own posts) that contain language you’ve deemed (or Instagram has deemed) offensive or inappropriate. “It’s not only my personal wish to do this, I believe it’s also our responsibility as a company”, Kevin wrote on the company’s blog. It lets you list all of the words that you find inappropriate or offensive.

Instagram is known for its handsome images, but the online comments on the social media site can sometimes get downright ugly.

Because of the anonymity social media allows, some services, like Instagram, tend to be fertile ground for abusive comments or harassment. Instagram has more than 500 million users from around the world, according to Systrom. The comments moderation tool is found in a new section of the Instagram app’s settings menu labeled “Comments”. The feature has already started rolling out. You can choose your own list of words or use default words we’ve provided.

In his post, Systrom said that he hopes the implementation of these tools will allow the diverse Instagram community to continue expressing themselves freely without fear of negative backlash.

If you turn the comment filter off, or remove custom keywords, any comments with those keywords will be unhidden. Just a few months ago, we saw the app get swipe to delete comments, the ability to report inappropriate comments and even the ability to block user accounts.

The features are part of a broader set of tools Instagram users can access to curb abuse, such as deleting comments or blocking accounts.
