Josh Donaldson out of lineup for Blue Jays series opener against Rays

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz (34) celebrates his three-run homer in the 6th inning with teammate Dustin Pedroia (15) during American League baseball action against the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016. On the next pitch, Tulowitzki blasted a no-doubt home run over the left-field wall, bringing the 47,816 in attendance at Rogers Centre to their feet with chants of “TU-LO!” and giving Toronto its first lead of the game, 6-4.

“Ezequiel hasn’t been playing a whole heck of a lot, and he’s had his struggles”, Gibbons said. “At the end of the day, you’ve got a job to do”. Matching his career-high of six earned runs, he only lasted 3.2 innings, his shortest start since way back on April 11th.

Even the final out, with a crowd of 35,333 roaring, was tricky, as Steven Souza foul tipped what looked like strike three to end the game, the Rogers Centre’s celebratory foghorn went off and closer Roberto Osuna began his game-over routine.

“I don’t want to make excuses”, Sanchez said.

Souza spoke with Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin before leaving the field.

“I’ve had these (blisters) come and go throughout the year”.

Souza said he misinterpreted what Martin had said.

But Troy Tulowitzki and his teammates say the American League East pennant race is far from over.

“He probably irritated, there’s a sheath in your wrist”, Cash said.

Neither starter factored in the decision. But if Monday night was any indication – two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings, granted two of the hits were back-breaking homers – he could still play a key role in the final few weeks of the season. The Red Sox have won each of the last six games he has started, including their rain-shortened win against the Orioles back on August 17th.

“He was dominating”, Gibbons said. And though it was highly odd to see Big Papi make a 270-foot “dash”, it was merely a scene-setter for a day of oddities to come.

“Longoria is a great hitter, he always hits the ball good down in the zone, and he made a great swing”, Liriano said. I don’t think it’s a big deal. Kluber (16-9) allowed an unearned run and four hits while passing the 200-strikeout mark for the third straight season.

Things could also go right for the Sox in a hurry here: if they win or split these series, life becomes much more hard for the Orioles, Yankees, and Jays.

RAYS 4, YANKEES 2 Corey Dickerson hit a two-run home run, Matt Andriese won for the first time since June and the visiting Rays stopped the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak.

Longoria hit the first pitch of the top of the seventh inning to left for his 32nd homer of the season, and Miller followed with his 28th homer, a drive to center on a 1-0 pitch to tie the game. It was the third time this season the Rays have hit back-to-back homers and the second time they’ve done it on their current road trip.

When they last met at Tropicana Park in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the beginning of the month, the Blue Jays were hard-pressed to win just one of three games. “It was down and away, good pitch”.

Ramirez hit his 23rd homer of the season in the fifth against Joe Biagini.

Arizona ace Zack Greinke (12-6) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

“It was an entertaining game to watch, I guess”, said Toronto manager John Gibbons, “although not from our angle”.

The fallout from Donaldson’s absence Monday means Darwin Barney is making his 20th start of the season at the hot corner, with Michael Saunders moving up to bat second in front of Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista, who was handed a half-day off in the DH role.
