In the early hours of this morning, Cox won gold in the women’s C4-5 500m time trial cycling event, beating a strong field that included Dame Sarah Storey, Britain’s most successful female Paralympic athlete of all time, who finished in fourth place.

Cox’s next two assignments in Rio will see her return to the athletics track for the T38 400m on Wednesday and T35-38 4x100m relay the following day, before she climbs aboard her bike again for the C4-5 road race on the penultimate day of the Games next Saturday.

Giglia clocked a C3 world record of 41.252 but Holland’s Alyda Norbruis took gold with a C2 world record of 39.631, factored to 36.908.

Tang Wai Lok of Hong Kong won gold in 1:56.32 and Hamer took silver in 1:56.58.

Earlier, Sophie Pascoe won gold in the women’s 100m backstroke S10.

She beat fellow Brit Crystal Lane in the C5 3,000m individual pursuit with a truly dominant display, catching and overlapping her compatriot after just 1,375m meters to retain her Paralympic title.

Hu also set a new record of 107 kg after Tijani failed in her attempt at 104kg
